The independent possessive pronouns are mine, ours, yours, his, hers, its, and theirs. The possessive adjectives, also called possessive determiners, are my, our, your, his, her, its, and their. We break down each type and offer examples of their usage below.
There are two types: possessive pronouns and possessive determiners. We use possessive determiners before a noun. We use possessive pronouns in place of a noun: Is that [determiner] your scarf? Both are possessive adjectives, as they are followed by nouns. A pronoun would not be followed by a noun. Additionally, it's much less common to use "its" as a possessive pronoun than it is to use "his" or "hers", for example.
