In 1962, Gordon assisted in founding the Judson Dance Theater, which hosted performances at the Judson Church. Some of Gordon's early works included Mannequin Dance (1962), Helen's Dance (1962), Random Breakfast (1963), and Silver Pieces (Fragments) (1964).
Gordon mounted in October 2012 for Danspace Project The Matter/2012: Art and Archive, based on his early work The Matter (1972–1979), and including versions of Mannequin (1962) and Chair (1974).
