In these cynical days when swashbucklers cannot be presented without an ironic subtext, this great 1938 film exists in an eternal summer of bravery and romance.
The Adventures of Robin Hood was originally envisioned with James Cagney playing the lead. However, when Cagney became embroiled in a contract dispute, the role went to Flynn, who had become a matinee idol with Captain Blood (1935). The film is in Technicolor and features an Academy Award-winning score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, one of the pioneers of film music.
However, Robin Hood and his men are hunted down by Sir Guy and the notorious Sheriff of Nottingham. The movie plot itself is purest escapist magic and very well written. This swashbuckler movie has great action sequences well staged with stylish and vitality, adventure, romance, outstanding final dueling and is pretty entertaining.

The productive employment of Technicolor used in The Adventures of Robin Hood still manages to mesmerise, and it unquestionably remains an unforgettable swashbuckler. It is directed by Michael Curtiz who visually contrasts extreme high and low angles while the lushly composed score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold helped to set a new high standard for film music.
