Born on Jan. 14, 1845, Fitzmaurice was the great-grandson of Prime Minister Lord Shelburne, and the son of Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice and his wife Emily. The lineage of the family dated back to the 12 th century where his ancestors were the powerful Fitzgerald and Fitzmaurice families.

His father was killed in action in 1914 while on active service in the First World War , and his mother, the former Lady Violet Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound , later married secondly John Jacob Astor, 1st Baron Astor of Hever .
