I remember reading this book (“The Adventures of Hiram Holliday” by Paul Gallico) as a child. It's a heart-warming tale about a little newspaper copy-clerk who has always dreamed of being heroic. Unlike most people who “just” dream, as he grew up he set out to get the skills he’d need: shooting, fencing, skiing and a host of others.

Mr. Prentice becomes frustrated with Smith’s failure to report on many of Holliday’s adventures, caused by Smith being away at key opportunities coupled with Holliday’s modesty in describing his encounters. He is sent with Holliday to Paris, where he yet again misses out on Holliday saving the French minister from a malfunctioning elevator.
