I think that partially it was because of Raimi's sense of humor and Campbell's gift for physical comedy, but also because the first film was very controversial, being banned in a number of countries and given an X-rating in the US upon initial release. It's why Evil Dead II is a toned dowm, semi-remake of the first movie.
