Tolkien read Thompson's works from an early age and gave a literary paper on Thompson's poetry when he was an undergraduate at Exeter College, Oxford in 1914 – a report of which I have analysed in my postgraduate research PhD thesis on 'The Genesis of J.R.R. Tolkien's Mythology'.
