"Black Destroyer" is a science fiction short story by Canadian-American writer A. E. van Vogt, first published in Astounding SF in July 1939. It has been marked as the story that represents the start of the Golden Age of Science Fiction. "Black Destroyer" was combined with several other short stories to form the novel The Voyage of the Space Beagle.
A.E. van Vogt is a key contributor to the golden age of SF. Originally published in 1957, The Mind Cage has some wonderful creative elements, but I did not find it to be the easiest of reads. It got a bit clunky at times, and there were sub plots/sidetrack musings that seemed un-needed, even though it is a relatively short 220 pages in paperback.
