Quote: ‘My Name Is Not Ali’ is the very sad and bizarre story of one of Fassbinder’s most recognisable stars, the mysterious, gentle-hearted Moroccan immigrant of ‘Fear Eats the Soul’, El Hedi ben Salem.
Ali (El Hedi ben Salem) is a young Moroccan immigrant who lives with five other men in a small apartment and spends his time with a small group of friends in a neighborhood bar.
Peter Lorre is replaced by Kurt Raab in the leading role. It’s not easy to replace Lorre, but Raab, with his shaven head and strange features, makes for a terrifying replacement. In M, we do not meet our pedophilic murderer, Hans Beckert, until the end of the film. In Lommel’s version, we meet the murderer right away.

He was an actor and set decorator, known for Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974), The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972) and Eight Hours Don't Make a Day (1972). He died on 14 March 1976 in Nîmes, Gard, France.

The constant distancing paradoxically brings us closer to the central characters, especially when they played as marvelously as they are by Brigitte Mira and El Hedi ben Salem. Mira in particular lights up the screen with an inner luminosity which is truly touching.
