In late 1979, Slash released the Germs' first album, titled (GI), an abbreviation of "Germs Incognito," a handle the group used to perform at unsuspecting clubs. Produced by Joan Jett, the album was incendiary but presented the songs with an elemental clarity that made it possible to hear how strong the material was in a way their shows did not permit.
