Ernst Udets Eltern waren der Ingenieur Adolf Udet und dessen Ehefrau Paula, geborene Krüger. Er wuchs in München auf und besuchte dort die Volksschule Stielerstraße und ab 1906 das Theresien-Gymnasium München.. Udet begeisterte sich schon früh für das noch junge Flugwesen. 1909 wurde er Mitglied eines Modellflugzeugclubs, 1910 unternahm er Gleitflugversuche.

He was a notable flying ace of WWI, scoring 62 confirmed victories, and rose to become a squadron commander under Richthofen and later under Hermann Göring. After joining the Nazi Party, he became involved in the early development of the Luftwaffe, where he was appointed director of research and development.
