World Teachers' Day is an international day held annually on 5 October to celebrate the work of teachers. Established in 1994, it commemorates the signing of recommendation by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

To this, Dr Radhakrishnan instead made a request to observe September 5 as Teachers’ Day, to recognise the contribution of teachers to society.

The history of Teachers' Day can be traced back to the early 20th century, with various countries establishing their own traditions to honor educators. To mark the signing of the 1966 UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, UNESCO first declared World Teachers' Day in 1994.
Teachers' Day, or Shikshak Diwas, is celebrated with much pomp across the globe. While World Teachers' Day falls on October 5 annually, India marks Teachers' Day on a different day.
