Gripsholms tidigaste historia går tillbaka till några gårdar i Kärnbo socken, bland dem Näsby och Finsta (även skrivet Finstad ), som drotsen Bo Jonsson (Grip) förvärvade åren 1377–1380. Där bildade han ett gods och lät bygga en borg, som fick både strategisk och politisk närhet till Stockholm.
