This Enniskillen school was founded by Royal Charter in 1608, with the motto "Honour all men". The school started life in Lisnaskea but moved to its present site overlooking the water in 1643.

Conocí a Oscar Wilde a comienzos de 1868 en la Portora Royal School. Tenía él a la sazón trece o catorce años. Su lacia melena rubia, muy crecida, era uno de sus rasgos distintivos. En aquel entonces su carácter era sumamente infantil, inquieto, casi revoltoso cuando no estaba en clase.
