The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, located on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles, is “the first school of music to be established in the University of California system.”
Honoring all musical traditions and maintaining a balanced emphasis on scholarship and practice, the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music pioneers new models for integrated musical studies by embracing an innovative degree program in Global Jazz Studies and a minor in Music Industry.
The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music is home to both exceptionally accomplished faculty and intellectually and artistically inquisitive students, and is supported by extraordinary alumni who are internationally acclaimed artists, scholars and influencers in the diverse world of music.
At The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, our students work in concert with a boundary-pushing medievalist, a leading scholar of the American musical, jazz legends, masters of traditional world music instruments, a punk scholar, in-demand composers, and others who are fostering transformative critical thinking about music and musical practices.

The only school of music. in the UC system. At its founding in 1919, UCLA (then called the Southern Branch) demonstrated its commitment to the music and the arts. The campus started with an art gallery and a music department that focused on music education.
