Gas flaring is the 160-year-old oil industry practice of wastefully burning associated gas, a common by-product that is extracted from reservoirs together with oil, typically from a flare stack located at an oil production site.
29 de sept. de 2022 · Gas flaring is the term for burning off the gas which comes out of the ground while drilling for oil. The flares are the giant flames often seen coming out of smokestacks on oil installations.
Non-emergency flaring and venting (which causes even worse environmental damage than flaring; see Methane Emissions from Oil and Gas) occur when operators opt to burn associated gas on a permanent or semi-permanent basis during production, or simply vent it to the atmosphere.
5 de may. de 2022 · The top 10 flaring countries accounted for 75 percent of all gas flaring and 50 percent of global oil production in 2021. Seven of the top 10 flaring countries have held this position consistently for the last 10 years: Russia, Iraq, Iran, the United States, Venezuela, Algeria, and Nigeria.
Satellite data estimates show that the top 9 largest flaring countries in 2023 were Russia, Iran, Iraq, the United States, Venezuela, Algeria, Libya, Nigeria, and Mexico. These countries accounted for around 75 percent of all gas flared and 46 percent of global oil production.
