Johnathan "John" Gilbert II fue un personaje recurrente importante y un antagonista de la primera y segunda temporada de The Vampire Diaries. Johnathan Gilbert was a great inventor. He designed and built a series of devices which Emily secretly enchanted with magic so that they would act as anti-vampire gadgets. His inventions did not actually work without the enchantments. The watch was in fact a compass which indicated vampires.
Johnathan "John" Gilbert II was the biological father of Elena Gilbert-Salvatore and the younger brother of Grayson. He holds contempt for vampires and was watching the tomb vampires as a favor for Katherine. He sacrificed his life to save Elena who was going to be killed Klaus for his ritual.
