ON this day in history February 10... ...2005, Lucian Freud's portrait of Kate Moss was sold for £3.9 million after a furious bidding battle. Naked Portrait 2002 depicted an almost life size Moss reclining naked whilst pregnant with her daughter Lila Grace.

Freud's decision to paint the supermodel was indirectly prompted by Kate Moss herself. In an article reproduced in the style magazine Dazed and Confused Moss revealed that one of her remaining unfulfilled ambitions was to pose for Freud.
