BUILDING EXTERIOR. Designed by the internationally acclaimed firm Herzog & de Meuron, the Parrish Art Museum is sited on 14 acres in the hamlet of Water Mill. The innovative design integrates architecture and landscape in a plan that both respects and reflects the singular natural beauty and rich artistic legacy of Long Island’s East End.
Located in Water Mill, not far from New York, the new Parrish Art Museum stretches as a discreet horizontal prism over the flat landscape of the Hamptons in Long Island, a quiet area that is a popular seaside resort among New Yorkers, and where several renowned artists still have their studios.
The starting point for the new Parrish Art Museum is the artist’s studio in the East End of Long Island. We set the basic parameters for a single gallery space by distilling the studio’s proportions and adopting its simple house section with north-facing skylights.

To manage rainwater and snow melt, the designers concealed primary and backup pipes in the X-braces that cross the building's central spine; the pipes deliver water to a belowground infiltration system without adding visual clutter to the building.
