Jonas’s father is one of the only characters in the novel, besides the Giver and Jonas, who seems to grapple with difficult decisions and complex emotions.
A kind, caring man, Jonas's father is a Nurturer who looks after newchildren until they are given to families. He becomes attached to the babies he cares for and breaks small rules for their sakes, such as learning their names and bringing Gabriel home to look after him better.
Father’s response to Jonas’s seemingly simple question unknowingly crushes Jonas, and reveals to the reader how truly hollow their society has made him. Father can barely understand what emotions are, or why he would need them.
Father is a Nurturer at the Nurturing Center. He is friendly and loving towards the newchildren. He is the care-taker of Gabriel and the father of Jonas and Lily, married to Mother. He had a sister named Katya.
What's so hard to understand about Jonas' Father is how he can be so caring and nurturing—look at the pains he takes to help Gabriel, after all—and at the same time be so casual about unnecessary death. But the fact is, Jonas's Father is the product of his environment.
When Jonas finally understands that his father killed the newchild when he released it, we understand why he is horrified, feeling that his father has betrayed his trust. As readers, we feel along with Jonas that his community is cruel to condone the murder of children and the Old.
Jonas's father reveals that he has actually peeked at the name of the newchild about whom he is concerned, because he thought that calling the baby by his name, Gabriel, might help him to thrive. Jonas is surprised his father would break the rules.
