The Neues Museum is unique on Museum Island in that the war damage to the building was much more substantial than that inflicted on the neighbouring museums, and that no earlier reconstruction attempt had been realised.

Neues Museum, Berlin. In 1997 David Chipperfield Architects won an international competition for the restoration of Friedrich August Stüler’s Neues Museum, originally built between 1841 and 1859.
Based on the plans by architect David Chipperfield, the original fabric of the building was preserved, and the reconstruction was guided by the existing structure and cubature as designed by Stüler. While new elements are recognizable as such, they blend in with the old.

David Chipperfield Architects sanierte das im Zweiten Weltkrieg beschädigte und teilweise zerstörte Neue Museum, nachdem Teile des Inneren über 60 Jahre lang als Kriegsruine Wind und Wetter ausgesetzt waren.
En 2003 comenzó su reconstrucción bajo la supervisión del arquitecto británico David Chipperfield que respetó la estructura original. Finalmente el Museo Nuevo reabrió al público en 2009. En sus 8000 metros cuadrados repartidos en cuatro niveles, el museo alberga alrededor de 9000 piezas históricas.
