Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen (Welsh: Gwauncaegurwen) is a village and community in Neath Port Talbot, South West Wales. Historically a part of Glamorgan, Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen is a parish made up of the electoral wards of Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen and Lower Brynamman.

Gwaun Cae Gurwen > Area History. The story of Gwaun-Cae –Gurwen began in the 17th Century – It was was part of the Caegurwen Manor and was initially open common land surrounded by mountains. The meaning of Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen is ‘White Hemlock Moor’ and was once known as Gwaun Ceger Wen: Gwaun=Moor, Ceger/Cegyr=Hemlock, Wen=White.
The standard Welsh dictionary has detetrmined that the original name was Gwaun-cegyrwen, and that cegyrwen is a small white flower which must have grown on the common at one time. The English name is hemlock.
